The University of Chicago Medicine - The Family Birth Center

Labor Support

At the Family Birth Center, you'll find a nurturing and supportive environment for you and your family when you're in labor. We offer services and amenities to optimize your labor experience, including:

Our team welcomes your team. We offer convenient accommodations for spouses, partners, co-parents, intended parents, and children, as well as other family members and guests supporting your childbirth experience. If their presence is important to you, it's important to us, too.

We encourage free movement during labor to help you manage pain naturally, position your baby for birth, and potentially shorten labor time.

The Family Birth Center is stocked with a range of labor and birth aids, including:

  • Birthing balls (also called labor, pushing or yoga balls)
  • Peanut balls
  • Pushing and squatting bars
  • Birth stools (also called squatting, birthing or labor stools)
  • Mirrors

Our specialists can coach you through movement and positioning exercises to help your labor progress. Additionally, with intermittent or wireless fetal monitoring (telemetry) during labor, we can observe vital signs to ensure that your level of activity is safe for you and your baby.

Our midwives have extensive experience in hands-on support for natural labor pain management, including:

  • Counter pressure
  • Hip squeeze
  • Pelvic presses

Our midwives often work with Doulas of Chicago and other local doulas. We may even be able to help you find a doula, if you choose.

Choose from a variety of aromatic herbal sachets, tinctures and oils to help create a soothing ambiance as you as you prepare to give birth.
