The University of Chicago Medicine - The Family Birth Center

Frequently Asked Questions

At the Family Birth Center, there is no such thing as too many questions. If we miss your question, please be sure to ask it during your visit or stay. Or, contact us.

If you think you may be experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. Seek immediate medical care, then ask to have your records transferred to your doctor or midwife later, if necessary.

Certified nurse midwives are advanced practice nurses (APNs) who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth and well woman care. Learn more about midwifery and meet our midwives.

Our goal is to customize your childbirth experience, whether you choose to create a birth plan or not. If you want to create a birth plan, our experts can offer guidance. If you prefer not to, that's okay, too. Either way, our team is here to support you through pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum recovery.

When You Arrive

Look for labor and delivery parking signs just outside of the Comer Children's lobby entrance. These are dedicated short-term parking spaces. A vehicle may remain at this location for 20-30 minutes while your support person assists you to the Family Birth Center. Once you are settled in triage, your support person should return to the vehicle and choose one of our long-term parking options.

When You Leave

We reserve two short-term parking spaces for Mother and Baby pick-up. Look for the pink and blue stork parking signs in front of Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital at 5815 S. Maryland Avenue. A vehicle may remain at this location for 20 minutes while your support person assists you. If you need more time, your support person should first choose one of our long-term parking options, then relocate to reserved parking when you are ready to leave.
